The Equal Pay Act gave women (and men) the first opportunity to challenge unequal pay and gender discrimination in hiring and promotion, but the EEOC didn’t do much enforcement of it for a number of years after it was passed, and it’s difficult to prove as most companies hide their pay scales, and hide their hiring and promotion practices. In addition, the legislation to protect someone who dared make a complaint didn’t get passed until the last decade, so who was going to take the chance of being fired and blacklisted? Not many. There are also many loopholes, so workers who bring up wage discrimination questions still can be fired. The Civil Rights Act dealing with sexual harassment was suppose to help men and women being harassed on the job, but it took years until a supreme court decision clarified just what sexual harassment was. The Pregnancy Discrimination Act was passed to protect women who were pregnant or who employers thought were pregnant or thought they would become pregnant from being denied employment, raises, and promotions. Both the Disability Act and the Age Discrimination in Employment Act protect both men and women from workplace discrimination.
The Lilly Ledbetter Act was recently passed as the Supreme Court ruled that pay/gender discrimination had to be reported within 6 months of it occurring, which is practically impossible to do as most companies hide pay rates from employees, and are difficult to discover over time, let alone within 6 months of the first occurrence. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/lilly-ledbetter/for-women-what-a-differen_b_436113.html
The Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) was passed so parents could take UNpaid time-off with their newborn or adopted child, without losing their job.
