Where is the most affordable and best place to live in or near Port Macquarie, NSW?

I am moving to Port Macquarie early 2010 with my 8 year old daughter. I will be renting and working part-time until she starts high school.
I would love to hear what the best locations, schools, employment etc are if you know the area well. What places if any, should I avoid?

I hear Port Macquarie is awash with water front properties right now. Apparently there has been a flood of interest from locals looking to move to the hinterland.
