Academic Curriculum Vitae
What are some good sports an nonathletic person can take up?
Hi! I’ve always been the book girl. Always. I’m pretty slow, with a low stamina level, i’m very weak and have a pretty tiny figure. But I figured I want to start taking up some sort of sport so I can put something other than academic clubs on my curriculum vitae.
I’m 100.7 pounds, 5′0, and 15 years old. My legs are stronger than my upper body, though, but i’m pretty short compared to other people at my school. I considered basketball, but im really short and slow so I dont know how that would work out.
Thanks!
BONUS: What would you recommend a starting point be?
Guys… i’m not helpless.. I wont resort to golf. I can build my stamina if that helps, please dont say boring sportss for fifty year olds. kthnx.
LOL. So the dp with the cheerleader, you’re not answering my question. I want to TRY, because I never have before. So what if I want to try something new? At least I’m making an effort. I like the dance suggestion, though if there’s anything else? W/b soccer? ;P
Well honestly I dont really reccomend starting a sports team now. All of the girls on the team have had experience and tried out for the teams every year since middle school. Its tough, and a lot of running. Practice would be almost everyday and takes up hours. And if its an outside sport you would have to play in the cold pouring rain or humidity most of the time. If your not an atheletic girl, then sports arent your thing. People may give me a thumbs down for saying it but I dont think you should waste your time. I wanted to try out for sports before but its not my speciality so whatever. Im in dance class and Im still not the greatest. If you want you should consider taking dance with your friends its more fun and easy if you have just a bit of rythem in you.

Clinician’s Guide to Medical Writing $34.95 This book is for any clinician who wants to write. It is for the physician, physician assistant, or nurse practitioner who sees patients and also wants to contribute to the medical literature. It is for the assistant professor aspiring to promotion and the clinician in private practice seeking the personal enrichment that writing can bring. Loaded with practical advice and real-world examples, this text will benefit readers who are new to medical writing and those who have authored a few articles or chapters and want to improve their abilities.Readers relate to this book because it is written by someone who has been in their shoes. Dr. Robert B. Taylor is a distinguished leader in the field of family medicine and is the editor of Springer-Verlag’s best-selling books, Family Medicine, 6/e, and Fundamentals of Family Medicine, 3/e. Unlike the authors of many other writing books who have little experience outside of academia or publishing, writing is Dr. Taylor’s avocation instead of the focus of his career. Dr. Taylor brings more than 14 years in private practice and 26 years in academic medicine. He has written every type of document covered in this text: review articles, editorials, case reports, letters to the editor, book reviews, book chapters, reference books, research protocols, grant proposals, and clinical study reports. Most of Dr. Taylor’s works have been published, but not all. In the process of producing his impressive curriculum vitae, Dr. Taylor has made all of the errors that frustrate fellow clinician-writers. Over the years, he has jumbled spelling, mixed metaphors, gotten lost in his own outline, written on unimportant topics, and submitted to inappropriate journals. But along the way, he has successfully published 18 medical books and several hundred papers. Dr. Taylor wrote this book to share what he has learned—what works and what doesn’t in medical writing. The purpose of this book is to show clinicians |

Gatekeepers of Knowledge: Journal Editors in the Sciences and the Social Sciences $120.6 Publication is the coin of the realm in the academy. Careers depend upon a strong publication record, and journal editors occupy powerful positions in the publishing process. This study examines the careers of thirty-five scholarly journal editors through in-depth interviews that cover their rise to positions of influence, their views of the work of journal publishing, their assessment of the electronic revolution, and the role played by personal networks in the conduct of their duties. Along the way some controversial issues arise including journal proliferation, the padding of curriculum vitae, and the state of craftsmanship in the academy today. The interviews are analyzed against the backdrop of paradigms pioneered by two social scientists, Kurt Lewin and Lewis Coser. Their models of gatekeeping and social connections inform the analysis throughout the text. This book provides a revealing look at a crucial part of academic life. |

Historical Dictionary of Nietzscheanism $102.38 The ideas and writing of the controversial German philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche have provided ground for contentious debate over numerous aspects of philosophy and cultural theory that remain relevant even a century after Nietzsche’s own death. However, a more sympathetic and nuanced consideration of Nietzsche’s writings is gaining in popularity, making an introduction to the ideas of Friedrich Nietzsche more needed and valuable now than ever before. The “Historical Dictionary of Nietzscheanism” provides this introduction not only by including important dictionary-style entries about his major ideas, lucidly and quickly explaining their important aspects, but also the details of his life, career, and his social and cultural relations. This context assists in understanding the origin, and eventual evolution, of his philosophical ideas. The reader will find discussions of earlier thinkers who influenced Nietzsche, contemporaries who agreed and disagreed with him, and those who perpetuated or distorted his thoughts after his death at the turn of the century. The work also includes a general introduction, a brief glossary of helpful terms, and a curriculum vitae and bibliography for Nietzsche, designed to help readers expand the horizon of their knowledge on this influential thinker.Author Biography: Carol Diethe (Ph.D., London University) is Professor of European Cultural History at Middlesex University. Her academic career has been spent considering the History of Ideas, and she has written two scholarly works on Nietzsche and is a founding member of the Friedrich Nietzsche Society in the United Kingdom. |

Negotiating with Asians: Doing Business in an Age of Terror $14.32 This book should make a significant contribution to scholarship in both the business and Asian Studies fields. It covers the process of cross-cultural negotiations with Asians from business, academic, and governmental perspectives. Each theoretical concept is buttressed by concrete examples and applications. This book includes material on terrorism that has not been previously published, due to the censorship policies of several Asian nations. The book’s basic argument is based on the supposition that bargaining with Asians is very different today due to the advent of terrorism. Negotiating with Asians is the only book of its kind which integrates the topic of terrorism. The intended audience for this book consists of American business, academic, and governmental individuals going to Asia to bargain. Such negotiations are not limited to business and government. Universities sending professors to do research in Asian science parks negotiate intensively to ensure that the fruits of research will be divided equitably. This book is the result of my recent research in Asia and my personal experiences. My specific qualifications to write this book are contained in the enclosed curriculum vitae. The table of contents are also enclosed. People in the intended audience are busy. So this book is short enough to be read on the trans-Pacific flight. It is set in 12-point type to overcome the poor reading lights on many aircraft. No photos or illustrations are needed. |

The Book of My Life (De Vita Propria Liber) $10.12 A bright star of the Italian Renaissance, Girolamo Cardano was an internationally-sought-after astrologer, physician, and natural philosopher, a creator of modern algebra, and the inventor of the universal joint. Condemned by the Inquisition to house arrest in his old age, Cardano wrote The Book of My Life, an unvarnished and often outrageous account of his character and conduct. Whether discussing his sex life or his diet, the plots of academic rivals or meetings with supernatural beings, or his deep sorrow when his beloved son was executed for murder, Cardano displays the same unbounded curiosity that made him a scientific pioneer. At once picaresque adventure and campus comedy, curriculum vitae, and last will, The Book of My Life is an extraordinary Renaissance self-portrait–a book to set beside Montaigne’’s Essays and Benvenuto Cellini’’s Autobiography. |

The Clinician’s Guide to Medical Writing $61.33 This book is for any clinician who wants to write. It is for the physician, physician assistant, or nurse practitioner who sees patients and also wants to contribute to the medical literature. It is for the assistant professor aspiring to promotion and the clinician in private practice seeking the personal enrichment that writing can bring. Loaded with practical advice and real-world examples, this text will benefit readers who are new to medical writing and those who have authored a few articles or chapters and want to improve their abilities. Readers relate to this book because it is written by someone who has been in their shoes. Dr. Robert B. Taylor is a distinguished leader in the field of family medicine and is the editor of Springer-Verlagbs best-selling books, Family Medicine, 6/e, and Fundamentals of Family Medicine, 3/e. Unlike the authors of many other writing books who have little experience outside of academia or publishing, writing is Dr. Taylorbs avocation instead of the focus of his career. Dr. Taylor brings more than 14 years in private practice and 26 years in academic medicine. He has written every type of document covered in this text: review articles, editorials, case reports, letters to the editor, book reviews, book chapters, reference books, research protocols, grant proposals, and clinical study reports. Most of Dr. Taylorbs works have been published, but not all. In the process of producing his impressive curriculum vitae, Dr. Taylor has made all of the errors that frustrate fellow clinician-writers. Over the years, he has jumbled spelling, mixed metaphors, gotten lost in his own outline, written on unimportant topics, and submitted to inappropriatejournals. But along the way, he has successfully published 18 medical books and several hundred papers. Dr. Taylor wrote this book to share what he has learnedb what works and what doesnbt in medical writing. The purpose of this book is to show clinicians how to translate observations and ideas f |

The Essential College Professor: A Practical Guide to an Academic Career $40 The Essential College ProfessorCollege professors are expected to perform a large number of tasks for which they receive little or no training. For instance, where in graduate school do you learn how to teach most effectively in a large auditorium, and what do you do differently in those classes from when you are teaching in a more intimate setting, with a few upper-level students around a seminar table or in a tutorial? How do you secure a contract for a book that you would like to publish? How do you go about applying for external funding to support your research? How do you write a particularly effective syllabus or exam? How do you create the sort of curriculum vitae that is most likely to earn you tenure, promotion, another position, or an administrative appointment? How do you chair a committee? How do you deal with a student who is disrupting one of your classes? Why should you engage in fundraising, recruiting new students, or maintaining close ties with alumni? Why should you develop a “strategic plan” for your career, improving your teaching and enhancing your research? Why is service only a small part of genuine academic citizenship? The Essential College Professor is about the “how” and “why” of being a faculty member in higher education today. Based on the author’s series of highly successful faculty development workshops, each chapter deals concisely with the most important information college professors need at their fingertips when confronted by a particular challenge or faced with an exciting opportunity. Written both as a comprehensive guide to an academic career and as a ready reference to be consulted when needed, The Essential College Professor emphasizes proven solutions over untested theories and stresses what faculty members need to know now in order to be successful in their careers. |
